Delivering Family Business Success, One Scoop at a Time

Schoep’s Ice Cream has been a Family Business Center member since 2010 and we thank them for the years of family business knowledge they are able to bring to all of our programs.

Schoep’s Ice Cream started out simply as one man’s hobby in the back of his grocery store. It is now one of the most successful family-owned businesses in Wisconsin. E.J. Schoephoester was the man who began churning the ice cream in 1928, and twelve years later Peter B. Thomsen purchased the company. Schoep’s Ice Cream has been run by the Thomsen family ever since.

Schoep’s has grown significantly from its humble beginnings. It is now Wisconsin’s largest independent ice cream manufacturer, but it has always remained true to its family-run roots. Today, the third-generation of Thomsens have taken over the day-to-day operations of the company. They include Alan, CEO; Eric, VP of innovation and technology; Richard, operations manager; and John, food service sales and special events.

Succession planning has played a vital role for Schoep’s Ice Cream over the years. It has helped them transition smoothly from one generation to the next and they are prepared to keep the company running strong for many years to come.
