From a College Dream to an International Success

EVCO Plastics has been a Family Business Center member since 2016 and we thank them for the years of family business knowledge they are able to bring to all of our programs.

You’ve likely heard the stories of Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. Entrepreneurs whose dreams of being successful and starting multi-million dollar companies started when they were still in school. While those stories are better known around the world, there is one that touches closer to home here in Wisconsin. That is the story of Don Evans.

Don Evans was just a college kid like the thousands of others who have gone to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. That was until 1948 when he decided to buy his first plastic injection molding machine and open Evans Plastics. Evans would partner with his brother-in-law three years later to open Evans-Zeier Plastics which produced plastic pieces for refrigerators.

It was in 1956 that Evans-Zeier Plastics landed its first big contract. Ray-O-Vac contracted the company to produce a battery seal that would be watertight and prevent electrical leakage.

In 1964, Don decided to sell his share of Evans-Zeier Plastics to his brother-in-law, and proceeded to open a 1,200 square-foot facility in DeForest, Wis. called EVCO Plastics.

EVCO Plastics has gone to have tremendous success not just in Wisconsin, but around the world. Today, the company has facilities in DeForest, Wis.; Oshkosh, Wis.; Calhoun, Ga.; Shenzhen, China; Monterrey, Mexico; and Juarez, Mexico.

EVCO Plastics has also gone through a successful transition in its leadership since its inception. Dale Evans, son of Don, worked his way up to chief operating officer in 1981, and in 1991 he was named EVCO Plastics president.

While there may be more glamorized college success stories out there than the one involving Don Evans, we are glad he took that leap-of-faith in college and started Evans Plastics. We cannot wait to see what EVCO Plastics has in store next.
