Four Generations In and Still Going Strong

Endres Mfg. Co. has been a Family Business Center member since 2000 and we thank them for the years of family business knowledge they are able to bring to all of our programs.

What’s more impressive: having grown a business from a barn on West Street in Waunakee, Wis. to an internationally known company, or being a fourth-generation family business? Neither has come easy for Endres Manufacturing, which was founded as the L.M. Endres Manufacturing Company in 1926 by Lawrence M. Endres Sr. The business was officially incorporated in 1930 and became Endres Mfg. Co.

Following in Lawrence’s footsteps was his son, Larry Jr. who started working at Endres Mfg. when he was just six years old. Larry Jr. was the one who began the structural steel business that now makes up over 95 percent of the company’s sales.

In 1966, the company was still operating out of the original barn on West Street, but with a few upgrades. However, it was decided an expansion was needed, so Larry moved Endres Mfg. to the southwest edge of Waunakee to a location that was four times the size of the original facility. Here is where he introduced the recognizable Bavarian theme, which if you have ever driven through Waunakee you will surely recognize.

Taking over for Larry Jr. was Ken Ballweg, who started working part-time at Endres Mfg. in 1965 and married Larry’s daughter Diane in 1974. Ken is the current CEO and has overseen projects such as the Madison Downtown Library, the American Family Children’s Hospital, and the Overture Center, as well as several buildings on the Epic Campus, at Edgewood College, and for the UW System.

Ken has now introduced the fourth generation to the family business. His children Ben, Sam, and Kate all started at Endres Mfg. as children and continue to be involved to this day. Sam is now company president, and Kate and Ben both serve on the company board.

As the company continues to grow and learn, it is all but guaranteed that future generations will see Endres Mfg. successful for years to come.
